"The Story"

My mother was a registered nurse so I grew up in a medically-oriented home. It was always my goal and dream to become a medical doctor. Mom performed insurance physicals on patients, and when I was a child I would often ride along and watch her take blood pressure, draw blood and do histories. I would always tell her, "When I grow up, I’m going to be a doctor."

When I was an adolescent, I started to develop headaches on a regular basis. I would even get at least one migraine per month. However, my problem when I was a child was that I could not swallow pills. Thus, my only relief was to lie in a dark room with ice and just wait for the headaches and migraines to go away. However, in hind sight, this ‘problem’ was a good thing as I have since learned of the toxic nature of a lot of these medications.

As a senior in high school and into my freshman year of college, I began to shadow several different doctors. By this time in my life, I was really into eating well, exercising and living a wellness lifestyle. I noticed that it didn’t seem to matter who I shadowed, all the medical doctors seemed to have a very similar treatment protocol. Almost all the patients walked out of the doctor’s office after their examination with sample drugs and/or a prescription for various medications. Having not taken medications and possessing a wellness mindset, I began to wonder if this is something I wanted to do for the rest of my life. At this time, I decided to observe other types of doctors.

Among the other doctors, I shadowed a chiropractor in Minot, ND. I spent the morning with him watching him practice. After four hours he asked me if I wanted to be adjusted. Not knowing what that was I decided, "Sure, sounds great." And, as they say, the rest is history. I would go observe him about every month. I loved being exposed to the wellness philosophy of eating well, exercising and getting adjusted. Each time I would visit he would adjust me as well. As the months went by, I noticed I was no longer getting headaches. Thinking chiropractors only fixed backs, on my third or fourth visit I finally asked him the reason my headaches went away.

That is when he told me "The Story." Then he told me that the entire body is controlled by the nervous system. He told me that if there is an interruption in the nerve flow this will cause the body to not work at its optimum. He said the interruption was a lesion called a "subluxation." He then explained that helping back pain is only a small part of chiropractic; chiropractic can globally help the body heal by releasing nerve interference which allows the body to heal itself. He called this "innate intelligence."

Thanks to the inspiration of this great chiropractor, I have been blessed to help thousands of people meet their healthcare goals without the use of drugs or surgery. My purpose in life is to happily live each day to the fullest and to help as many people as possible meet their goals through positive learning and transformational experiences. That is why I continue to tell "The Story."

Yours in wellness,

The Doctor Asks some important questions of interest to Rapid City residents - Chiropractor Rapid City The Doctor Asks...

Can someone who has had back surgery receive chiropractic care?
Yes. Rest assured that we will avoid the surgically modified areas of your spine. However, what we find is that surgical interventions will often produce spinal instability above or below the involved level. This is will be the focus of your chiropractic care.
What's the difference between maintenance, prevention and wellness?
Maintenance chiropractic care is an attempt to keep a dynamic, ever-changing and adapting organism (you) in a static relationship with your environment. Preventive chiropractic care is mostly about early detection. Wellness chiropractic care is an attempt to optimize our health and be all that you were designed to be.
